January 06, 2017  |  by Samy's Camera
The tech world has three words for you: Viva Las Vegas! CES 2017, a tech enthusiasts dream destination, kicked off today the Las Vegas and will be held through January 8th. While there are robots that will give you a run for your money at a game of chess, connected cars, and some serious gaming laptops, the Samy's Camera team is here to get the scoop on the latest and greatest in photo and video innovation. And, there have been some exciting announcements from major industry players.

For the Love of Film

Kodak's announcement was short and sweet: Ektachrome is back. Ektachrome, the go-to film for cinematographers due to its extremely fine grain and contrasts, was discontinued in 2012. “It is such a privilege to reintroduce KODAK EKTRACHROME Film to the cinematography community,” stated Steven Overman, Kodak’s chief marketing officer and president of the Consumer and Film Division, in the company's official press release. “We are seeing a broad resurgence of excitement about capturing images on film. Kodak is committed to continuing to manufacture film as an irreplaceable medium for image creators to capture their artistic vision. We are proud to help bring back this classic.” Check out our Kodak products here.

Igniting the Artist Within

Made official on January 4, the day before CES, Nikon announced that its D5600 model will be available in the U.S. beginning this month for the suggested retail price of $799.95 with the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens. “The Nikon D5600 is the latest camera in Nikon’s popular D5000 series -- a camera line that represents a stepping stone for photographers who want to further explore their creative boundaries,” said Kosuke Kawaura, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc. “Now with Nikon SnapBridge, users can easily upload and share images with their friends and family, showcasing what and who they love. With the introduction of Nikon’s D5600, Nikon demonstrates our commitment to providing an attainable and highly capable camera option for photographers of all skill levels.” Check out our Nikon store here.

The Best of Both Worlds

You know that old saying that you can't have it all? Well, Panasonic aims to prove that old adage wrong with the LUMIX GH5. "The new camera delivers a high-end, hybrid performance to photo enthusiasts and professional videographers looking to capture moments in 4K 60p/50p video and 6K photo," the company stated in its official news release. "Defying all the general concepts of what a mirrorless camera can do, the LUMIX GH Series has reached a number of milestones with this introduction. Packing a host of innovative advancements in picture quality, response and performance into an unimaginably small-sized body, the new LUMIX GH5 opens the door to a new stage of photographic and cinematographic culture." Travel Light

Just before attendees flooded the halls of the Las Vegas convention center, Canon unveiled the PowerShot G9 X Mark II, the latest lightweight and travel friendly addition to the company's point-and-shoot portfolio. "For those looking to make a step up to a premium point-and-shoot camera, the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II features a 1.0- inch 20.2 Megapixel sensor and packs a lot of punch in a very small package," Canon stated in a January 4 press release. "It also features the latest image processor, DIGIC 7, providing users with improved subject tracking and scene detection, and more. For added social network-sharing convenience the PowerShot G9 X Mark II is the first Canon PowerShot digital camera equipped with Bluetooth®1 for easy pairing with a compatible smartphone or tablet."
